Introduction-

As one of the most diverse and successful architectural and design practices in India, Kembhavi Architecture Foundation is an independent consulting firm offering a broad range of specialized services.

Founded in 1972 by Sharad and Nalini Kembhavi, KAF offers an entire gamut of services including architectural design, interior design, project management, civil and structural engineering as well as providing solutions for Green Building Habitats among others.

With equipped offices in Hubli and Bangalore and a dedicated team, the firm has provided consultancy to over 1000 clients and has won numerous commissions across various spheres of the construction industry, including malls, hotels, corporate offices, transport terminals, health care facilities, cultural centers, townships and private residences.

At KAF, we consider our clients to be valued partners in breathing life into projects. And since its inception, the two principals have ensured that every client gains utmost value by virtue of their open-door policy, and a firm stress on responsive service, quality and timely delivery.

Over the years, the firm has arrived at a harmonious blend of experienced seniors and young professionals with fresh ideas that has propelled the firm to be one of India’s premier design houses today. Here, we consider no project to be big or small. We are equally capable of handling townships as well as private residences, while maintaining the highest standards in design and execution.

Besides the firm’s commitment to pursuing excellence in design, KAF proudly stakes its claim as the pioneer of the Green Building Revolution. Their creation – the Police Bhavan in Gulbarga – is one of the first gold-rated green buildings in the country. For the past few years, KAF has been researching green building practices – both traditional and futuristic – to create improved, cost-effective and eco-friendly habitats. At present, the firm is engaged in joint research with the Michigan State University on evaluating Lead India and Lead USA practices, while also designing projects spread across an area of over 10 million sq ft.

Sharad K. Kembhavi – Principal Architect (1942)

After completing his Bachelors in Architecture from Sir JJ College of Architecture in Mumbai, Sharad worked with “Chartered Architect” Mr. DN Bavale on several projects including theaters, shopping complexes, hotels etc. His deep desire to acquire further skills led him to the United Kingdom where he specialized in Interior Design and also worked as an associate in one of UK’s biggest firms – William Olds. Here, as a design-team leader, he was responsible for winning two major projects – The Bee Hive Chain of Hotels and Casa Mila Housing.

He pioneered Kembhavi Architects in 1972 along with wife Nalini and guided the firm to be one of India’s best-known consultancy firms. Sharad’s inclination towards contemporary thought and fresh creative design ideas has won the firm acclaim from all quarters. He has been academically active and was heavily involved in setting up the Dept. of Architecture in B.V.B. College of Architecture, Hubli. He has chaired several academic committees and is also an expert professor at various institutions.

Nalini S. Kembhavi – Principal Architect (1952)

Graduated from Sir JJ College of Architecture in 1972 and partnered her husband in establishing Kembhavi Architecture Foundation. She, too, has been instrumental in strengthening the Dept. of Architecture in BVB College, Hubli and is an expert pedagogue at various institutions.

Nalini’s bent towards green practices is one of her primary strengths and her course on solar passive architecture at IIT (Powai) fortified the firm’s knowledge base. A strong proponent of the green revolution, she steered the firm to join the Green Movement with an assortment of eco-sensitive habitats and a certified green building- one of the first in India.

Her stint as Head of Department in BVB College of Engineering and Technology (Hubli) from 1989-2002, Chairman of Board of Studies, Karnataka University (Dharwad) and Chairman BOS of VTU saw the spread of architecture in an otherwise architecturally backward region. Nalini believes in creating innovative designs leaning towards a greener, better future, backed by competent technology and research.

After completing his B. Architecture from BVB College of Engineering, Hubli, Indrajit specialized in architecture at Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai. He had a short stint with architect Gerard Da Cunha for the book “Houses in Goa”.
